Antivirus software and firewalls are no match for the artificial intelligence (AI) enabled exploits of cybercriminals. Today’s bad actors are successful because they exploit the same technological advances and innovations that the rest of us use to transact and engage online.

Modern cybercriminals gain entry into our businesses through weak spots and vulnerabilities around the unsecure edges of our operations – the endpoints. Endpoints are the physical devices that connect to, and exchange information from, a network. These are things like desktops, laptops, workstations, servers and even smartphones, tablets and other devices. In the Internet-of-things, cameras, refrigerators, security systems, thermostats and other smart devices are also considered endpoints.

Sophisticated AI-enabled cyberthreats can only be contained and stopped at your organization’s endpoints with technology that is at least on par with, if not superior to, what the cybercriminals use. This is why endpoint detection and response (EDR) is quickly becoming a foundational component of every organization’s cybersecurity strategy.  EDR actively detects active threats – also known as threat-hunting – before bad actors can have their way with your systems and data.

EDR Differs from Anti-Virus Endpoint Protection

Reactive anti-virus endpoint protection is not a substitute for EDR – anti-virus may sound like threat hunting, but it is not the same.

Endpoint protection scans for existing evidence of compromise, whereas EDR detects behavior that appears malicious and could potentially result in compromise. Traditional anti-virus solutions are meant to find virus signatures in infected files – reacting after a file has been compromised. They run at scheduled times, and typically, after new signatures are uploaded by the anti-virus software vendor.

As the next generation in endpoint protection, EDR uses AI to detect malicious activity preemptively, based on threat pattern recognition, and respond to threats before endpoint compromises occur.  EDR monitors activities and events taking place on endpoints in real-time so that threats are detected, quarantined and stopped before they can change files or exfiltrate data.  The best solutions, like Visory’s EDR, use behavioral analytics to scan memory, run processes and network activity for suspicious activities and common steps of an attack.

Managed EDR is Accessible for Everyone

We launched EDR because firms of all sizes need the same industry-leading cybersecurity capabilities that large enterprises use in their defense against bad actors. Our managed offering combines the expertise of our inhouse cybersecurity team with AI-enabled technology to actively hunt, review and stop suspicious activity on the endpoints in your environment.

We also believe that ongoing cybersecurity education is key to ensuring everyone in the organization stays sharp on detecting potential threats, breaches, and phishing scams. Email initiated phishing attacks were up 600% in 2021 over 2019 and 82% of breaches involved the human element.  For firms concerned with complying with regulatory guidance and keeping insurance policies in force, the integrated training program we offer meets those requirements and more.

In today’s world, your cybersecurity strategy needs to protect your organization’s data and access across the entire organization, including your remote workers’ endpoints. Doing so successfully requires a team of experts equipped with the right technology, playing offense behind the scenes while your frontlines are focused on your business. Firms that can’t shoulder the cybersecurity burden themselves need to consider managed solutions, like Visory’s EDR and other offerings, to keep their customers safe and their data secure.
